Check Valves: customer selection questions

Should I choose a swing, lift or dual-plate check valve for a pump discharge?

Compare the pump flow range, pipe size, permitted pressure loss, installation orientation and how quickly flow can reverse when the pump stops. Disc travel and spring arrangements affect opening and closure behaviour. Provide the pump and piping duty so the construction can be checked; choosing only by pipe diameter can result in unstable operation or unsuitable closing behaviour.

Can the check valve be installed in a vertical pipe?

Confirm the permitted orientation for the exact model, including whether flow is upward or downward. Gravity, spring force and disc guidance affect operation, so approval for a horizontal line does not establish vertical suitability. Follow the flow arrow and the model-specific installation instructions rather than rotating an existing valve without checking.

Will a non-slam check valve eliminate water hammer when my pump stops?

The name alone is not a guarantee. Closure response must suit the rate at which flow slows and reverses in the actual system. Provide the pump stop conditions, flow velocity, pipe route and length, elevation changes and any existing surge protection. A transient assessment may be needed; a check valve is not a substitute for every surge-control measure.

How can I check that the valve will open properly at my minimum flow?

Provide minimum, normal and maximum flow, fluid density, available pressure differential and the allowable pressure loss. Compare the selected model's opening and pressure-loss data at those duties, not just its nominal size. A valve that starts to crack open is not necessarily fully or stably open; spring and disc behaviour must also suit the operating range.
